Between February and May 2025, I worked on a new project as part of the BioDesign Challenge, expanding on my earlier research into fungi and their role in ecosystems. What began as a data-based animation aimed at farmers (Schimmels op het land) evolved into an interactive installation that brings the hidden world of fungi above ground, making it accessible to both children and adults.
Through coded and projected visuals, a layered soundscape and a calming voice speaking through you as the mycelium network, I invited visitors to explore the complex, often overlooked processes happening beneath our feet. The project aimed to foster a deeper sense of connection with the natural systems we depend on, by making them visible, tactile and emotionally engaging.
The final work was exhibited at Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd, where I presented it alongside other BioDesign participants. Visitors responded with curiosity, amazement, warmth and reflection.
In September 2025, I was invited by RE_NATURE Festival to show The Understory at Ruigoord Amsterdam. Visitors again responded with a lot of enthusiasm. To see the full project page on their website, click here.
